Papeete Tahiti Islands Tours 2017, French Polynesia, Cruises to Papeete & Tahiti Islands, Papeete (Tahiti Island, French Polynesia) cruise ship Travel Vlog 4K https://goo.gl/HzFhA4 Papeete is the largest city in and capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti. Papeete is not a tropical paradise. It is a typical government center and industrial port with small doses of French and Polynesian charm. It has shopping, eating, and drinking, but very little sightseeing for a capital city and even fewer top-class hotels. The residents speak French and Tahitian, although English is spoken by many in the tourist trade. The people-watching is superb. Get around ======== Papeete is a walking city. It's really too small to bother with any other form of transport, unless you are going out to the fringes, or would simply like to experience the famous le truck for fun (hop-on, hop-off, anywhere in the city center for about XPF100!) Bring a water bottle: it can be quite hot and humid. Taxis are clean and efficient although relatively expensive and may be hard to find after 6pm. There are two dedicated taxi stands along the waterfront. Fares are prescribed by the government and are displayed inside Taxis. The fare is roughly XPF 1000 plus a charge for distance. Hotels will know exactly what the fare is to the city centre. As an example the fare from the Manava Suite Resort to the water front as at 17/4/2014 is XPF2300 before 8:00PM. The fee increases by XPF 1000 after 8:30PM. Meters are unheard of, so confirm the fare before getting into a taxi. Le Truck will take you to other parts of the island and around town quite cheaply. The service is infrequent or non-existent on weekends. See === The waterfront. Papeete has redeveloped its waterfront into a long park, with foods and carnival-like attractions. Sleep ========== Stealth Campsite. From the waterfront, travel east along Prince Hinoi Street for approximately 1 mi/ 1.6 km. Stay on the right side of the street. You will arrive at a bridge that crosses a stream. Before you cross the bridge, you will notice cement stairs that lead to a paved foot/bike path that also passes under the bridge, running parallel to the stream. Go down these stairs, and you will see the spot on the opposite stream bank under the bridge. There is graffiti on the wall and a fire pit. Bring a sleeping pad and some way to ward of bugs. You wont find anything cheaper than this. Buy ==== Black pearls abound. There is just about every kind of store here, including some (particularly near the Marché) who have no problem selling you imitation balls of black glass or fiberglass at market prices. Be sure to look for a certificate of authenticity on the wall of the shop, and trust your guidebook for recommendations. Eat ==== You can go broke eating in this town. There are some fine restaurants but expect to pay US$30 for a hamburger at a hotel restaurant or other proper sit-down establishment. There are a lot of midrange places where you can expect to pay US$20-30 for your whole meal. French and Chinese are well represented here. Look for the word "Snack" in the name of the restaurant. There is also a conveyor belt sushi place that's very good, and the chefs are quite friendly there. The best deal in town is the Roulottes, the food trucks that set up shop every evening in the big square in the waterfront park. Every day they begin setting up around dusk. Chinese, French, and Tahitian cuisine are all well represented. You can get chow mein, poisson cru, crepes, pizza, ice cream, and because this is France, everything comes with bread. Expect to pay about XPF 1500 for your whole meal. Food trucks also set up further from town such as at others Marinas and near hotels.

The country geographically comprises two main landmasses ‒ that of the North and South Islands ‒ and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island nations of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of both animal and plant life. Most notable are the large number of unique bird species, many of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and introduced mammals. With a mild maritime climate, the land was mostly covered in forest. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions caused by the Pacific and Indo-Australian Plates clashing beneath the earth's surface. English/Nat Six-thousand people gathered in the Tahitian capital, Papeete, to protest against two days of rioting and looting which has left dozens of buildings burnt and wrecked. French authorities have already jailed eight people for four months each for their part in the violence. Today, they announced the sacking of a senior police chief whose trade union called a general strike over French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. These are the people Polynesia's government calls the 'silent majority' who favour French rule. They had answered calls in newspapers to take to the streets and protest the violence over the past few days. The violence was sparked by France's nuclear test at Mururoa Atoll and is being blamed by the government on trade unions of the country's independence party. The rally was organised by the Polynesian Economic, Social and Cultural Council - who stress they are a non-political group. President Gaston Flosse has repeatedly accused international journalists of fueling the riots by sensationalist reporting of the nuclear test story - a view echoed by many in the crowd today. They believe the riots were orchestrated by a minority not by the silent majority. SOUNDBITE: We're thousands and thousands and tens of thousands. We live in this country, in this beautiful country which is a peaceful country and want to give a different message to what was expressed this past week. SUPER CAPTION: Laurent Bessou, Representative Economic, Social and Cultural Council The rally passed peacefully though one heckler was removed by police. Though before he was driven off in a police van he harangued President Gaston Flosse in full view of the cameras. The idea that the disturbances were caused by a vocal minority was echoed by France's High Commissioner, Paul Ronciere, who met a delegation from the rally in his offices on Saturday. SOUNDBITE: (English) We urge everybody to restart normal lives with a re-established public peace in the town of Papeete and we are very concerned about that and we hope that very soon the destructions we have observed downtown will be repaired and normal life will be re-established. SUPERCAPTION: Delphin Graffe, High Commission Spokesman On the other side of the capital independence party leader, Oscar Temaru, was taking journalists on a tour of slum areas. He was quick to dismiss the protest rally and condemn those who attended it. SOUNDBITE: They are selfish people because they have their own salaries, very good salaries. They work for the government and after that the problems, the social problems of the country: 'It's not our problem.' That's the attitude of those people. I know them. SUPERCAPTION: Oscar Temaru, Independence Party Leader. Temaru claims 15-thousand people in Tahiti are living in abject poverty. About 20-thousand, he says, are unemployed. He blames the government, accusing them of corruption - a charge which is hotly denied by those in power. Many living in these slums - came from smaller islands in a fruitless search for work in Tahiti. This is the part of the island paradise, the glossy holiday brochures don't show. Mr Temaru says the government is doing little to help improve conditions here. President Flosse would point to French financed housing projects scheduled through to the year 2003 as easing the plight of the homeless. But with social unrest clearly bubbling below the surface and more nuclear tests planned by the French; a repeat of the violent scenes which followed the first blast cannot be ruled out.
